ICLs, also known as Phakic intraocular lenses (PhakicIOLs), correct vision in much the same way that external contact lenses do, except ICL is placed inside the eye where they permanently improve vision. They are micro thin lenses implanted over the natural lens, inside the eye, to correct spectacle power. The Collamer base of the lens material is 100% biocompatible, which is designed to work in harmony with your body’s chemistry.

ICL procedure unlike LASIK, SMILE & other laser specs removal procedures, does not require creating a corneal flap and corneal tissue removal, thus not causing any corneal dryness as seen in standard specs removal processes. The ICL surgery provides a safe and effective surgical correction of powers as high as -20D and cylindrical correction of 6D.

This eliminates the need for spectacles and contact lenses and has ability to correct the widest range of myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism (cylindrical power).

Who is a Candidate for ICL Surgery?

  • At least 18 years old
  • Your specs number should be stable for about a year
  • Eye power more than -8 dioptres up to -18 dioptres
  • Cornea thinner than 450 microns
  • Cylinder power of the eye more than 3.5 diopters
  • Unhealthy cornea including Keratoconus
  • Dry eye situations
  • Any situation where LASIK is not a suitable option

So, if you wear corrective eyewear of High Power such as glasses or contact lenses and would like to be free of its burden, and you are not a candidate for LASIK surgery, then ICL is the most safe and well known method to provide you complete correct vision.

Although ICLs are very safe procedures and has also been US-FDA approved, which means they have been given safety clearance for Human Eyes, however, like any other surgical procedure, it can have some complications which are extremely rare and avoidable if a proper screening check is done before the process. Infection, increased intraocular pressure, and the possibility of accidental damage to the crystalline lens during the procedure are some of the risks seen. Some patients may experience some discomfort during the healing process (like dry eyes, light sensitivity), but these effects are temporary. Nobody in our surgical experience has ever lost sight due to this procedure.

ICL Screening is the most important step is the entire process. It is important to measure ICL size and parameters have to be customized to individual eye so as to fit ICL perfectly in a natural space within the eye. Even the slightest variation can disrupt final outcomes. Parameters like ACD, white to white diameter, Keratometry (corneal curvature) and Pachymetry (corneal thickness) are measured. Retinal evaluation is also done especiallyin patients with high power to avoid any complications.

The whole procedure generally takes around 15 to 30 minutes.

Most of the people, approximately 95 percent, will never need glasses again. The remaining 5 percent will have their dependency reduced on glasses. Your surgeon will explain this difference to you better.

Usually, 3-4 weeks.

After ICL treatment, eye behaves like a normal eye. It means that you may need glasses for reading after age of 40 years as a part of normal aging process of an eye.

Those keratoconus patientswhose disease is stable and has stopped progressing and there refraction in the eye or the power of glasses has been stabilised, without any surgical intervention for last two years, can get maximum benefit out of ICL Surgery. ICL procedure is a safer and more effective option for these patients in case they want to avoid glasses or contact lenses since it does not involve removing a part of the corneal tissue to correct the refractive error, unlike conventional laser surgery.
